The LEGAL lab
The LEGAL laboratory is located at the Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM), Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil. Being situated in the heart of the Amazon basin has some disadvantages, but many more advantages when it comes to biodiversity studies.
Research in the LEGAL laboratory relies on the use of molecular data (DNA sequences, microsatellites, AFLPs, RADs) to study patterns and processes of diversification of Amazonian vertebrates. We concentrate primarily on freshwater taxa, but have also a number of projects with other vertebrate groups. Additionally we are interested in the genetic architecture of adaptation and speciation. Nearly all studies are done in an ecological context, and have laboratory and field components.
Some key research programs include:
Phylogeography and population genetics of Amazonian aquatic vertebrates
Phylogenetics, biogeography and systematics of cichlid fishes and killifishes
Biodiversity analyses, and phylogenetic community structuring of Amazonian rheophilic fishes
Use of DNA barcodes and molecular phylogenetics to characterize biodiversity of Amazonian vertebrates
Analysis of the genetic architecture of adaptive differences between closely related species
Hybridization and hybrid zones in Amazonian vertebrates
